My letter to the Federal Exec on the Balanced Parliament issue

Liberal Democrats are often accused of cynical opportunism. It is regularly claimed that we will say and do anything for a sniff at power.

Now we may have the chance to prove this claim to be true or false.

For decades we have said that the country needs electoral reform. To go into a coalition without a referendum on electoral reform being a condition would confirm all of the negative things people say. If we could give up on such a central issue why should anyone believe us ever again?

Even with a referendum, going into coalition with the Tories would be a bitter pill, but by sticking to our guns we can at least show that we are prepared to act in the interests of the country without sacrificing our principles.

  1. Can't agree more, Matt.

But even ignoring the PR elephant, which of the other three primary manifesto promises could the Tories satisfy LibDem aspirations?

None, as far as I can see...

I'm hoping these initial talks with the Conservatives are just a 'you topped the poll' formality and will add pressure on Labour to offer an STV referendum.
Then the serious talks can start!

  2. Thanks!

I agree that there is far more to consider, but the guidelines were that messages should be kept brief.

Captain Clegg did say (repeatedly) that the party with the most votes and seats should get a chance to try, so you could well be right.

    We should find out soon.

Thanks for your comments. I would really rather not have anonymous comments, please give a name even if it is made up.

Please try to keep it reasonably polite, it's mainly a blog for grown ups but good manners are always welcome.

Thanks again
